Amberley Museum welcomed The Bus Inspectors on Friday 11 October to begin listing and scoring their fantastic collection of historic buses.
We were expertly guided by volunteers at the museum, who shared their deep knowledge of the vehicles and helped The Bus Inspectors to understand and record the significant points about each one.
Amberley is one of eight collections where scoring is now in progress as part of our national project to grade the UK's 10,000 historic buses.
Alan Lambert, Chairman of the Southdown Omnibus Trust, said: "We covered everything in great depth. There was lots to discuss and debate (about what is significant) but, most importantly, we came to conclusions".
Scoring is a complex and potentially lengthy process, with time taken to build a full understanding of each vehicle and its historical context, extensive record taking and, finally, decisions on provisional scores across several categories.
Most collections will be scored over a series of visits, with notes and scores later reviewed and ratified by a panel to ensure consistency across the project.
Hear more about our first trip to Amberley in our forthcoming podcast and videos to follow on our YouTube channel.
With thanks to all at Amberley Museum.
